IanR Posted 31 May , 2010 Share Posted 31 May , 2010 Hello Can anyone shed light on the wearing of lanyards in a Royal Irish Rifles (or other infantry) battalion. The two men (brothers George and Edwin Wickers) in the attached photos served in 7th Royal Irish Rifles (I think they are RIR uniforms - if anyone can confirm that would be great). Both are wearing lanyards - but what did they signify? One trained as a sniper and one a signaller. Is there a link to these roles? Thanks Ian
Grovetown Posted 31 May , 2010 Share Posted 31 May , 2010 Both are wearing lanyards - but what did they signify? In the Great War context, nothing. They were issue items to all men of all arms/ corps; and intended for attachement to the also-issue clasp knife, which was theoretically to be carried in the left breast pocket. That said, these are fancier than usual and so seem to be private purchase. Best wishes, GT.
