I've enlarged it a bit and, yes, it does pixillate.

However, the two lads on the left, front row, of the picture are wearing Imperial Service badges, and although nclear, the shape of the badge could be the Cheshire's POW plume and scroll.

Incidentally, the Cheshire Yeomanry didn't go to France. The 1st went to Gallipoli, then Egypt until merging with the Shropshire yeo and forming a battalion of the KSLI and ending up in France in 1918 with the 74th Division.

The other war-raised regiments didn't go overseas as units.

Was The South Lancashire Regiment Infantry Or Yeomanry?

The pictures must be either Cheshire yeomanry or South lancs the person who gave me copys was the son of the guy in the pictures

His Medal index card says south Lancs Regiment

Arthur Maynard-Born 1895 Stockport

Reg no 31594

The South Lancashire Regiment (proper name was actually The Prince of Wales' Volunteers) was an infantry regiment; as max says, the badges are defintiely not theirs. It was a large and distinctive badge, not easily mistakable.

I'd suspect your man didn't go overseas with the Cheshire Yeomanry, but was transferred beforehand, or went overseas as a Cheshire Yeoman, but marked for transfer to whatever when he arrived in theatre. As I said, the Cheshire yeomanry weren't in France as a unit, and only as a component of an infantry battalion (after amalgamation) from 1918.

Thanks For That Steven

maybe pictures were taken before he went to france, so looks like it must be Cheshire Yeomanry

Dean,

That's the Grosvenor Bridge in Chester in the background of the first photo.

It looks like the men are positioned on the Little Roodee, now a car park.

This is as close as I can get in StreetView ...

Chester - Little Roodee looking towards Grosvenor Bridge

This is just below the ramparts of Chester Castle, which IIRC was the CY's barracks at the time.

The second photo could well also be the outbuildings of Chester Castle. Another possibility is the Duke of Westminster's estate at Eaton Hall. The Duke was prominent in the regiment and I believe a detachment was based at Eaton Hall.

Cheers,

Mark

You'll find many Stockport men went overseas during the summer and autumn of 1916 and found themselves swapped between regiments.

I'm struggling with that one, but there's a possibility it could be the Duke's Drive about half a mile from the Roodee. I'm only about 20% confident of that though!
