What would be the earliest date at which a British soldier might be photographed wearing recognisably WW1-era khaki uniform? (Peaked cap, puttees, etc).

Shoulder straps with metal shoulder titles replacing the twisted cord straps and cloth shoulder titles on the jacket in 1907.

Twisted shoulder cords were replaced by shoulder straps in 1904, SD still bearing them being recalled in 1908 - the date of the metal titles introduction. That said, some Twisted cord SD was seen in France in the early stages of the war.

Best wishes,

GT.

The peaked Stiff Cap was a 1905 introduction, and the introduction of the SD was looked at here...

SD introduction.

Thanks all, especially GT: now why didn't that thread come up in a search, either standard or beta? I must have upset the GWF gods.
