Alibear27 Posted 15 May , 2010 Share Posted 15 May , 2010 Hi, I'm doing a research project on the above and, although i have about 70% of the details from the CWGC there are some missing (or there's not enough detail on the Debt of Honour to confirm they are from Hoole), I'd be grateful of any information anyone has about the memorial and also who/how the names were gathered to go on the memorial as I assume there must be a detailed record of who they were somewhere! Thanks very much! Alison

John_Hartley Posted 15 May , 2010 Share Posted 15 May , 2010 and also who/how the names were gathered to go on the memorial as I assume there must be a detailed record of who they were somewhere! Two likely ways forward. Firstly, the local newspaper is likely to have carried a story about money being raised for the memorial and/or an invitation for names to be put forward, etc. I see it was unveiled at Easter 1923 so you'd probbaly be searching the papers from around 1920 onwards. Secondly, ask whoever now has responsible for its maintenance. They may have original documents or, at least, be able to suggest where they might now be. My guess, from the wording of the inscription, is this was probably a local authority memorial, rather than a parish one. Presumably that'll have been whatever the council was before the area was incorporated into Chester in 1954.
MBrockway Posted 15 May , 2010 Share Posted 15 May , 2010 Further to John's suggestions, I can recommend the Chester History and Heritage Centre in St Michael's Church opposite The Falcon in the city centre. You can't miss it. Also the main Library in Chester has an excellent local history section and are very helpful. IIRC both have good newspaper archives. bruce Posted 16 May , 2010 Share Posted 16 May , 2010 Playing a little further.... On Faichney's MiC, there is no mention of either his service in the herts yeo, nor of his death Fosbrooke.....NoK in Brixton, buried in Boulogne Southern cem VIII.C.58, went to France 25.8.15 and entitled to 14-15 Star, but again his MiC shows no date of death. William Stringer, parents Late Robert and Elizabeth (no address), is commemmorated on Thiepval 3C and 3D. According to his Mic, not in F&F before end of 1915 so no Star, and also no date of death. MBrockway Posted 18 May , 2010 Share Posted 18 May , 2010 Kevin, Hoole Bank and Hoole Village are little hamlets outside Chester just beyond the M53 and a couple of miles away from the Chester suburb known as Hoole, which is really named after Hoole Road - a major road leading out of Chester towards (unsurprisingly) Hoole Village. They're more likely to be commemorated in Mickle Trafford if indeed there is a memorial there. The rest of your list are very local to the memorial though. Guest rockpile17 Posted 20 February , 2011 Share Posted 20 February , 2011 Name: OWEN, NEIL Initials: N Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Lance Corporal Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers Unit Text: 8th Bn. Age: 21 Date of Death: 21/09/1915 Service No: 11667 Additional information: Son of Thomas & Catherine OWEN, of 3, Burley Villas, Hoole Bank, Chester. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: I. C. 4. Cemetery: AZMAK CEMETERY, SUVLA Neil OWEN is commemorated on the war memorial in Connah's Quay, next to his brother Frank. The reason for the mention of Hoole Bank is that his widowed father had remarried and moved there. Of the 5 OWEN brothers in 1914, only 2 survived the war, and one of those 2 (Sgt Walter OWEN RWF) was wounded and discharged in 1916. (Locally known as Skip Owen thereafter, due to his limp). mikechester Posted 9 January , 2013 Share Posted 9 January , 2013 I'm still finding my way around the mass of information on this wonderful site and have just come across this thread. One of those named on the Hoole memorial is also listed on the memorials in Backford church and at Port Sunlight and this summary of his life (part of a project to research all those named on the Backford memorial) should help to explain why. 2nd Lt Thomas Carline 18th Kings Liverpool Regiment Thomas Carline was born on 17 Dec 1887 at 93 Francis St, Chester, the third son of John and Elizabeth Carline; his father was a Post Office clerk and later a superintendent. He was baptised at St John the Baptist church on 21 March 1888. The family moved to 19 Hamilton Street in Hoole and the 1911 census describes Thomas as a clerk with a soap manufacturer (Lever Bros.); he lived in Port Sunlight after his marriage to Edith Hallam in Q4 1917 and is also named on the Port Sunlight Memorial which commemorates Lever Bros employees. In 1911 his father had bought a plot of land on Grove Road and built ‘Leaholm’ where Dorothy (daughter of Thomas’s brother John and his wife) was born in 1912. It is not clear when Thomas joined up but it must have been early in the war as he was awarded the 1915 Star. He rose to be Company Quartermaster Sergeant in The Kings (Liverpool Regiment) and was promoted to temporary 2nd Lt attached to the 15th Battn Lancashire Fusiliers. Thomas was killed on 30 September 1918 during the Battle of the St Quentin Canal, when the 46th (N Midland) Division stormed the Hindenburg Line at Bellenglise and took 4000 prisoners and 700 guns. He is buried in the Uplands cemetery at Magny-la-Fosse, in the St Quentin district of Picardy.

Alibear27 Posted 22 February , 2013 Author Share Posted 22 February , 2013 Hi Andrewr, Thanks very much for this! Pleas can you let me know where you got it as I have to verify before it gets included in the official list (Hoole Heritage and History Society are trying to get it published for next year). Thanks very much, again.
clive_hughes Posted 22 February , 2013 Share Posted 22 February , 2013 Hi, I see the name of William Henry ELLIS RN on Hoole War Memorial. I had forgotten that he was connected with there. He was born 4 April 1884 at Menai Bridge, Anglesey, and joined the Navy on 8 November 1902 as Carpenters crew (his trade was a Joiner). Having served in various ships and shore establishments, in May 1912 he was posted to HMS KING EDWARD VII and was aboard her when War was declared. On 1 January 1916 he was promoted to Leading Carpenter's Crew, but on 6 January the ship struck a mine and sank off Cape Wrath, Scotland with one fatality. He was then sent to shore base HMS PEMBROKE II and became a Shipwright 2nd Class on 7 March 1916. On 11 March 1916 he was posted to HMS CADMUS. On 1 January 1917 he died of heart failure in the China Sea aged 31, and was buried at sea. His next of kin was recorded by the Navy as his mother Sarah, of Demerara House, Menai Bridge, and he is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial; the Menai Bridge (Llandysilio) War Memorial (as a Petty Officer 1st Class!); and the Llandysilio panel of the North Wales Heroes' Memorial Arch in nearby Bangor. The CWGC show his parents resident (by the 1920s anyway) at 20 Vicarage Road, Hoole so I guess that was his connection. I'd be pleased to learn if any other information is available. asanewt Posted 26 February , 2013 Share Posted 26 February , 2013 Hello, I must have dozed off on this one. I have a fair bit of material regarding the action in which C Doubleday perished along with several comrades including my Dad's brother if you are interested. Good luck
