Stephen Nulty Posted 26 May , 2004 Share Posted 26 May , 2004 DOVER CASTLE was built in 1904 by Barclay, Curle & Co. at Glasgow with a tonnage of 8271grt, a length of 476ft 5in, a beam of 56ft 8in and a service speed of 14 knots. She was built for the Intermediate service but in 1910 was transferred to the London-Cape-Mombasa run. On 11th August 1915 she was commissioned as a hospital ship for 607 patients plus cots. Two years later, on 17th May 1917, she was torpedoed by U-67 north of Bone in the Mediterranean whilst on a voyage from Bone-Malta-Gibraltar. All 632 patients were saved with most of them being transferred to the British India hospital ship Karapara. The wallowing derelict was then sunk by a torpedo fired from an escorting vessel. Michael Lowrey Posted 28 July , 2004 Share Posted 28 July , 2004 Stephen, The German submarine that torpedoed the DOVER CASTLE was the UC 67, not the U 67. Best wishes, Michael
