crags72 Posted 11 May , 2010 Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Hi, newbie here so please be gentle! I'm researching my relative and am trying to find out information about his service history and how he died. I've got Col Wylly's (sp?) book and it looks like he was involved in a Battle for Kemmel Village (I know his date of death was 26/4/1918 which was when the 9th were involved in this battle). I've not been able to locate his service record so think it may have been destroyed. Can anyone please suggest any further avenues of research? His service number was 29370. I do have his medal card. Thanks a lot in advance, Craig.

Age: 30 Date of Death: 26/04/1918 Additional information: Son of James and Annie Tyldesley, of Westhoughton, Lancs.; husband of Edith Rosina Tyldesley, of 29, Victoria Avenue, Levenshulme, Manchester. Well known Lancashire Cricketer. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: IV. B. 37. Cemetery: LA CLYTTE MILITARY CEMETERY The other 4 privates are commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial with no known graves. From the Cemetery Details it might be that your relative died of wounds as a PoW. The cemetery was begun in July 1916 and used by field ambulances and fighting units until March 1918. On 10 April 1918, Croix-du-Bac was in German hands but was retaken by the 23rd Lancashire Fusiliers on 2 September, and a few further burials were made in the cemetery in October. After the Armistice, Plot I was completed, and Plots III and IV formed, by the concentration of 328 British graves from the battlefields and from the German Plot (II); the German graves were removed to other cemeteries, as well as one Portuguese grave. There are now 554 Commonwealth casualties of the First World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. Hope that starts to put some flesh on his memory. crags72 Posted 11 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Thanks very much for your reply. Yes, I do have his CWGC details but never thought that he may have been a PoW - interesting! Ta for the extra info as well, he was in illustrious company! That helps to flesh things out a bit. I'll keep on digging and perhaps someone can provide some more info. Craig.
