NeilEvans Posted 10 May , 2010 Share Posted 10 May , 2010 For quite a while i have been unable to trace Thomas Stanley Postam. He is remembered at Wrockwardine Wood, now a part of Telford. The closest i have come to tracing him is a Thomas Postern, born 1888, Wrockwardine Wood. There are also a family of Postans in the area. Not much help but i have drawn a blank. Well over to you........good luck Neil
grantowi Posted 10 May , 2010 Share Posted 10 May , 2010 According to Free BMD there are no POSTAM's born between 1850 and 1900 Grant
NeilEvans Posted 10 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 10 May , 2010 And there is the problem. Must be a different surname.....but what. Having said i wonder if names have ever been made up and added. It doesn't help when i've indexed the local paper and drawn a blank. Neil

NeilEvans Posted 11 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2010 CHeers Kevin. Wrockwardine and Wrockwardine Wood are both in Shropshire, but over 8 miles apart. Back in the day Wrockwardine Wood was a large place, the parish covering Trench, St. Georges, The Nabb, Donnington. The memorial remembers 52 men from WW1. 19 from WW2. River97 Posted 11 May , 2010 Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Neil, Here is a list of names from SDGW, through Ancestry, who have connections with Wrockwardine. I will also do a check of the naming with other Commonwealth countries, as he may have been wearing another uniform - and serving under an alias. Cheers Andy. ralphjd Posted 11 May , 2010 Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Neil. The nearest I can trace is a Thomas H POTHAN ASC S-256424 born 1892 Madeley son of Robert and Sarah according to 1901 Census and MIC. 1911 census spelt POTHAM. Any help ? Ralph. IPT Posted 11 May , 2010 Share Posted 11 May , 2010 I concede defeat. Tried 1901 census, 1911 census, FreeBMD, SDGW, CWGC, National Archives, Ancestry. The 1911 census shows only 2 Thomas Stanleys, and 2 Stanley Thomas's in the county. I was slightly interested in Stanley Thomas Bastable but not too convincing. On CWGC, I tried only inputting POST and WW1 to maximise results, got a number of similar surnames but nothing stands out. Bizarrely, your "family" of Posterns are all around the same age! Frustratingly, it does appear to be a genuine surname, as it appears on a Google search, and one random entry of a Sarah Postam's death in 1930. Does seem to be more common in America, which raises the slight possibility that it was a relative in the US forces. Only result in NA, is an unlikely Henry Postams. I even tried searching SDGW for the whole county to scan through the surnames. I always try to think how the engraver could have got it wrong (Often inexplicable!), and you could imagine Postarn (ARN) reading as Postarm (AM). No joy. Foiled agin. NeilEvans Posted 11 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Thanks IPT/Raplh. There are a few more engraver could have got it wrong Not an engraver, more an artist. It's stumped me for 3 years now. As for Stanley Thomas Bastable, that' rings a bell. I've found no links outside of Shrewsbury, he spent a fair few years in India with the KSLI. He died of TB. Here's his grave.
ralphjd Posted 11 May , 2010 Share Posted 11 May , 2010 Keep going. Took me five years to find one on our memorial (unveiled 1924), and he did not die until 1961 !! Ralph.

NeilEvans Posted 12 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 12 May , 2010 Cheers Mike, Shipnal would be Shifnal, which is close to Wrockwardine Wood. And he's not on any of the 250 Memorials i've got. Shame about the W.H Neil
