HMS Resolute Posted 9 May , 2010 Share Posted 9 May , 2010 Hello. I have seen pictures of U.S. Army Officer's rank and collar devices being blackened, and also in its "gold" appearance still. Which would be accurate for a soldier just arriving to France in 1917? I am specifically questioning about the "U.S." tab, Crossed rifles infantry tab, and the rank insignia on the epaulettes. Thank you very much for your time.
JMcCulloch Posted 10 May , 2010 Share Posted 10 May , 2010 Well, I can tell you from my Grandads' uniform that it was darkened brass and almost certainly unpolished after arrival at the front-so patinaed and/or smudged.
HMS Resolute Posted 10 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 10 May , 2010 Thanks, I think that my misconception was with inaccurate reenactors. It doesn't make any sense to have insignia shiny in the field.
