larney Posted 5 May , 2010 Share Posted 5 May , 2010 Hi, Does anyone know the whereabouts (a trench map reference would be great) of the 11th Lancashire Fusiliers on 23 March 1918? A man on one of my local War Memorials was killed with them one day, and his Great Nephew would like to know where, as he's going out to France in July. Thanks in hopeful anticipation! SteveJ. larney Posted 5 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2010 Thanks Croonaert, It will make it a bit more interesting for his visit to see the line of retreat for the Battalion at least. The man, (Private John Lewis Phillips) was a machine gunner, and was shot through the temple while trying to unjam his Lewis Gun. I would guess he was probably left where he fell during the retreat by his battalion. By what is written in the local Church, he was killed at Dawn that day. Cheers, SteveJ.
