Ron,

I would not describe myself as a specialist but ...

My notes show that by 28 August 1916, 1/5th King's Liverpol Regiment had been withdrawn from the line to a rear area (and had been there some time) with the rest of 165 Brigade and the 55th Division. It was involved in fairly intensive training in the area of St. Maxent (about 8 miles SW of Abbeville). Specifically on the 28th the GOC 55th Division visited the batalion and 'a tactical exercise consisting of digging a model strong-point with covering party in front, Lewis Gun detachments etc was conducted in the afternoon and proved very successful practice'. It is not clear if this was just a demonstration for the GOC, whether the GOC saw it at all and whether or not the whole battalion was involved. The whole of the previous week had been spent on tactical training following the losses at Guillemont at the beginning of the month. The general thrust of this was to try to teach the lessons that had be learnt from earlier in the Somme campaign. There is no record of any casualties resulting from training; the diary records 'Sick 1'

28 April 1918 1/5 KLR is in the line at Festubert. The war diary records that it was a quiet day but 'evening heavy shelling'. There are no notes of casualties even during the German attack on the 55th Division earlier in the month on the Givenchy- Festubert line; in fact the diary at this stage is pretty thin.
