Remembered Today:

Postcard of my grandfather at Gardelegen?

My grandfather was a POW from the 27th May 1918 until the 29th December 1918.

I have just found the attached postcard and photo.

My mum always said that the man on the right was a Polish POW?

Tim,

The top one is definitely a PoW card, the words Gepruft and Kriegesgefangenenlagers can be made out but the rest needs some one to play with the image to see if they can bring anything else out. There also seems to be a faint cachet or writing at the top left. The message seems odd? From what I can read it says "Come from home 9! On a post card!"

I assume he was in a Scottish Regiment of some kind. Any chance of a name etc? Rank may also be an important clue as the postmark may not indicate that the photograph was taken at Gardelegen, just sent from there.

The second one is obviously some sort of medical establishment but where? The nurses uniform is probably the clue but I know nothing about them. The image has a "British" feel about it and most of them look as though they are from the same regiment and some look unwounded. What is on the back?

Hi Doug.

My Grandfather was Private Charles Edward Freeman 2nd Batt Devonshire reg - number 74039 - T/44485 (secondary number on his MIC)

He was captured in the Devons famous battle at Bois De Buttes.

My thought on the message on the card is

""Come home have I! On a post card!"

""Come home have I! On a post card!"

That sounds better.

Tim,

Which one is he in the hospital photograph? The front row appear to be nearly all wearing the cut away jacket of a Scottish regiment. The PoW photograph is difficult to see but is he wearing a Scottish bonnet?

Hi Doug.

I am told that he is the second from the right on the front row.

Why he would be wearing a Scottish uniform i do not know, he was in the 2nd Devons when captured and after the war was attached to the Wiltshires?

Many thanks for your interest an assistance.

Hi Corisande.

That seems like the sort of dry wit my Grandfather had.

Regards to you both.

Tim.
