I wonder whether some expert could help with this please. Is it possible to tell from the service number, when a man enlisted? I am interested in Pvt Percival G Crowhurst b1899, sussex, Royal sussex regiment, G/24378. MIC shows Victory and War medals. Thanks for any help. John

If you have ancestry and you look up the MIC details of the numbers close to your number ( a few dozen). When you have these you might be able to identify a service record for one of them. If you are lucky to find one this should give you a good stab at enlistment date.

It is most unlikely John. I've found three men, in the same regiment, with exactly the same number, so it's highly improbable that they would have joined up in the same year.

John

The closest number on my database for the Royal Sussex is G/24346 who joined on the 6th November 1917. He could well have attested earlier than that but 6th Nov is when the number was issued. G/24599 joined on the 28th December 1917 and so your man was almost certainly issued with his number between these dates.
