Just submitted two "In from the Cold" names to Terry, the names appear on the church memorial in Alford Lincolnshire, had another look at the list earlier and the name Albert Ellerby KOYLI kia 23-11-1916 is also there, but I cannot find any trace of him anywhere, CWGC,SDGW, FREEBMD or the 1901 Census, another IFTC subject if only he could be traced, any takers ? Ralph.

I may be barking up entirely the wrong tree here - or just plain barking! - but I have a hunch that this is your Albert ELLERBY:

Name: STEPHENSON

Initials: A

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

Unit Text: 8th Bn.

Age: 29

Date of Death: 23/11/1916

Service No: 35404

Additional information: Husband of Leonora Ethel Maw (formerly Stephenson), of Wadworth, Doncaster.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: VI. P. 10.

Cemetery: RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=490723

(SDGW: Albert Stephenson, born Louth, enlisted Doncaster)

and that this chap is his half-brother:

Name: ELLERBY, WILLIAM

Initials: W

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: East Yorkshire Regiment

Unit Text: 13th Bn.

Age: 22

Date of Death: 02/05/1917

Service No: 37221

Additional information: Son of Mrs. Annie Ellerby, of Ranters' Row, Alford, Lincs.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 4 and 5.

Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=1541293

(SDGW: born Mount Pleasant, enlisted Alford)

1891 Census:

North Somercoates, Louth, Lincs

William VESSEY, Head, Widower, 63, Farmer, b Worlaby, Lincs

Ann STEPHENSON, Housekeeper, Single, 32, b Grimoldby, Lincs

Albert STEPHENSON, H's Son, 4, b Louth, Lincs

In Q4 1893 William VESSEY dies (I think!), so Ann is out of a job...

In Q2 1894 one Annie STEPHENSON marries William ELLERBY in Spilsby district (7a 1079).

This *might* be the 42-year-old unmarried Army Pensioner who was lodging with the McGARRY family in Holywell Rd, Alford, in 1891.

They have 2 more children and then husband William (prob. birth Q1 1851 in Spilsby) presumably dies - can't find a death registration.

1901 Census:

Boarding with the TEMPLE family at Ranters Row, Alford

Hannah [sic] ELLERBY, Widow, 43, Housekeeper, b Scunthorpe(?!?)

Ethel M ELLERBY, Daughter, 5, b Alford (Ethel May, born Spilsby Q3 1895, 7a 586)

James W ELLERBY, Son, 4, b Alford (James William, born Spilby Q2 1897, 7a 573)

The Gate, Ulceby with Fordington, Spilsby, Lincs

Martha FORMAN, Head, Widow, 57, Innkeeper, b Sloothby, Lincs

Fanny A FORMAN, Daughter, 20, b Ulceby, Lincs

Albert STEPHENSON, Servant, 14, General Helper with Cows & Poultry, b Louth, Lincs

Albert Stephenson marries Leonora Ethel RHOADES in Spilsby Q1 1911 (7a 803).

1911 Census:

10 Stanstead St, Little Coates, Grimsby

Albert STEPHENSON, Head, Married, 24, Brewer's Canvasser, b Louth

Leonora Ethel STEPHENSON, Wife, Married under 1 year, 24, born Ashby, Lincs

South Street, Alford

Annie ELLERBY, Head, 55, Widow, Boarding House Keeper, b Thimbleby (??!!)

Ethel May ELLERBY, Daughter, 15, Servant (Domestic), b South St, Alford

James William ELLERBY, Son, 14, Errandboy (Stationers), b South St, Alford

As these are the only ELLERBYs in Alford in 1911, it's likely that James William is the 37221 William ELLERBY above.

Now, there are more holes in this than a Swiss cheese ...

For one thing, William Ellerby's service record survives, and

a. his mum could barely sign her name (which may explain her PoB discrepancies between the censuses!), and yet the 1911 census form was apparently completed by Annie herself.

b. the casualty NoK form states "None" for father (OK if deceased, I suppose) and "None" for full and half-blood siblings (not OK, but perhaps whoever filled in the form for her didn't know or didn't ask!)

I reckon you might have to order Albert STEPHENSON's marriage cert or (James) William ELLERBY's birth cert (refs above) to find out if their mother's maiden name was Stephenson.

The local people who erected the memorial may not have known that Albert wasn't an ELLERBY.

Bloomin eck :excl: I think you have it Adrian, the more I read your post the more feasible it becomes. Well spotted. Ralph.
