I saw great fountains of earth spray up in front of Wieltje and in what we called Granatwäldchen [?Shell Copse], and the enemy shrapnel bursts in the air. After dark the show became much more exciting. The whole horizon was alive. The muzzle flashes flared up restlessly and incessantly, a pale glow shot across the sky here and then there, the bright magnesium light of the flares shone out again. I heard that the British had sent up two red parachute flares as the signal for an artillery barrage in front of Wieltje.
