19 April: Towards the evening our operation against the projecting trench sections in front of the so-called Engländerhof and Wieltje commenced. I stood at the regimental observation post near our quarters and watched the very heavy artillery fire. The activity at a searchlight battery set up not too far from me was peculiar. They fired off shells known as firecrackers [Kanonenschläge] which produced a lot of smoke in order to attract enemy fire. - 51st and 52nd Reserve Divisions and XIII Corps took part in the shooting.
