Nigel Marshall Posted 24 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 April , 2010 A mystery next. Captain Gerard Walter Matthew seved with 12th Bn & 4th Bn Royal Irish Rifles and was entitled to a 1915-15 Star Trio. He was still a serving officer on 6th January 1919 when his medals were applied for. He died on 9th June 1920. He is not list on CWGC or ODGW. Had he left the Army and then died of something unrelated to his service or could he be non-commemorated?
Nigel Marshall Posted 24 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 April , 2010 This concludes Comber New Cemetery burials as listed on CWGC. There may be other commemorations on family headstnes for other service personnel buried or commemorated elsewhere that I did not see. I hope someone finds the images useful. David_Underdown Posted 25 April , 2010 Share Posted 25 April , 2010 On Gerard Matthew, on a quick search of the Gazette I can only find promotion to temporary captain http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/29091/pages/2246 and transfer to "the local reserve" http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/302...upplements/7580. No obvious relinquishment of commission, but it may be that that reserve was demobilised or whatever, so he was no longer on active duty at the time of his death. Guest Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 (edited) Apparently Gerard Walter Matthew died of Encephalitis Lethargica in 1920 this was an Epedemic between 1915 and 1926....Surely if this is a Long Term Illness due to Service then he should be recognised with CWGC. Appendix 1 to the entry for July 1916 in the War Diary of 13th ... www.nickmetcalfe.co.uk › uploads › 13th-R-Ir-Rifles PDF Issue 29886, p 3. 3 Captain Gerard Walter Matthew. Commissioned into The Royal Irish Rifles on 18. September 1918 and joined the 13th (Service) Battalion. Edited 12 August , 2020 by Guest
