Remembered Today:

Lost burial at Gordon Terrace Cemetery, Ypres?

I don't know if anyone has any information on unknown burials at Spoilbank Cemetery, but I have just found an entry in De Ruvigny's Roll, which commemorates 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Gordon Haigh, of the 172nd Company Royal Engineers. He was educated at Aberystwyth University, in West Wales.

My query is that the entry in De Ruvigny states that he was buried at Gordon Terrace Military Cemetery, near Ypres. This is an old name for Spoilbank Cemetery I believe. Looking at the CWGC database, Arthur is commemorated on the Menin Gate, so I would think that his grave was destroyed by shellfire (if the entry in De Ruvigny is correct). If that is the case, does he merit a Special Memorial, or is more evidence needed? Are there any graves to unidentified Royal Engineers officers in Spoilbank Cemetery?

Cheers,

SteveJ.

SteveJ: I can't answer your question, but can I add one more?

CWGC doesn't record him as being attached to any Company...

The other RE casualties in France that day were

BRAISHER WR 113719 77TH FIELD COY 15/02/1916 ROYAL ENGINEERS

HAIGH AG - - 15/02/1916 ROYAL ENGINEERS

HANCOCK GJ 42453 77TH FIELD COY 15/02/1916 ROYAL ENGINEERS

PEARCE PG 43391 77TH FIELD COY 15/02/1916 ROYAL ENGINEERS

so could he have been attached to 77th Company, not 172nd?

Apologies if this deflects from your question, but just noticed that others that day were all from 77th...

Hi Kevin,

He's definitely 172nd Company- both on SDGW and De Ruvigny. That's interesting about all of the other casualties that day being 77th Company though- it merits some investigation! His CO was Major G. A. Syme, and his letter to Arthur's parents says about the dangers of mining, so I wonder if he was in fact 172nd Tunneling Company?
