mjsl Posted 19 April , 2010 Share Posted 19 April , 2010 I am doing some resrach on Serjeant Ernest William CUTTING he was killed in action on 29th Sepember 1917 when in the Tank Corps 1st company "A" Battalion. Looking at a reference book it just said "From August 22 till October 9, by which time hope of a British success at Ypres had been more or less abandoned, the Tanks fought in about a dozen minor actions. They made almost as many more unavailing attempts to fight." It then briefly list a number of these actions on August 22, 23 & 26, Sepember 20 & 26, and October 4 but nothing on 29 Sepember 1917. The action on Sepember 26 "fifteen Tanks operated near Zonnebeke Village. The attack was not a success, though the Tanks Did a great deal of good work." I would be very grateful for any further information about Serj CUTTING or his unit.
17tankman Posted 19 April , 2010 Share Posted 19 April , 2010 Yes very strange can't see any officers or other soldiers in the 1st WIA or KIA on that date. It could be he was killed moving up for another attack in Oct or the details are wrong and it was 20/09 or he died of wounds on the 29th. Suggest you look in his local town paper as sometimes there are descriptions of how they were killed as reported by the officer who sent the letter to the parents.
