Remembered Today:

HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY

Hello All.

I am trying to research the fallen who's names appear on my local War Memorial.

I have the name of George Buckley, though I believe he did not serve in his local County Regiment, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

The 1911 census leads me to believe that he may have been born in 1901/2, therefore too young to fight in an English Regiment, depending on when exactly he enlisted.

The CWGC has a matching name with no age accredited to The Highland Light Infantry.

Perhaps this is my man. His service no (CWGC) was 57337.

Would it be possible for a Regiment researcher to either confirm or deny this for me?

Many Thanks in advance,

Wes.

Just curious, but where is the War Memorial? It may make confirming or denying your hypothesis a bit easier.

Hello.

Tartan Terrier,

The memorial is in Hodnet, North Shropshire.

Hywyn,

Sounds like I can eliminate that one then.

Thanks to both of you for your input/interest.

Any other ideas greatfully received.

Best Regards.

Wes.

Hello.

Rough Diamond,

I had elimanted this George Buckley due to him living in Nelson, Lancashire according to my copy of Soldiers Died In The Great War, KSLI, (Part 55).

Tartan Terrier,

I have been corresponding with Neil about the Hodnet Memorial and presumed he had a photo of it.

However there is no pic on the site?

I will contact him and see if he has/wants one.

During my short correspondance with Neil I have found him to be an extremely amiable chap and if anyone is looking for info I am sure he would not mind being your first port of call, hope I'm not presuming too much here.

Thanks again for the interest.

Wes.

Where someone lived was not a guarantee that they wouldn't be commorated on a Cenotaph elsewhere, in many cases Men were listed on Cenotaphs because their Parents, Siblings or other family members lived in that town, in some cases Canadian or AIF men are commemorated on Cenotaphs in the UK, someone from outwith the town is not unusual.

Hello,

Sam,

Perhaps 'your' man is the correct chap then.

I will have a look around the cemetry to see if I can find a headstone.

I have a couple more to investigate, so maybe I will 'find' him.

Best Regards

Wes.
