FJM Wilkens

I am researching this man. Frederick John Mouat Wilkens.

I know he joined the 19th Service Battalion N.F. and became C.Q.M.S. He then returned to the UK 23,1,1917 and gained a commission in the Cameron Highlanders. His medal card mentions the N.F. but no Cameron Highlanders. It does mention the RAF.

Would I be right in thinking he had to be commissioned to join the RAF and went through the Cameron Highlanders to serve as a pilot in the RAF. I know he flew later in civilian life. I also know, from the gazette, he was still commissioned in the Cameron Highlanders in 1922. He next appears as a pvt in the M.S.V.R. (Malay State Volunteer Rifles) Dec 1923, whilst still apparently retaining his commission in the Cameron Highlanders, Second Lieutenant ClassII, yet being employed by the Eastern Smelting co Gopeng.

Does anyone know of his service Cameron Highlanders/ RAF

Hi again Peter

Do you have an Ancestry account?

Apart from his MIC, which contains some details, there is a listing-

Great Britain, Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificates, 1910-1950

Professional & Organizational Directories

which has his picture and notes his birth date and place on a card along with current address and what plane he flew!

It is dated 1929.

Of course there is no service or pension records, as I noted above

regards

Robert

Hi

Yes I have an ancestry account and have the info you mentioned.

I have tried to upload a pdf file onto my Image host to show the

correspondence regarding the MSVR, but in won't upload pdf.

Is their any way to undo a pdf or save it as a normal jpeg image.

PeterH.

There is only one Wilkins mentioned in the Cameron History index and he is Captain E J Wilkins 6th Battalion QM and he was an original 1914 Cameron.

Not much help I'm afraid Cheers Rob.

These Army MICS for people who went into the RAF do not always mention every Army unit men served in. There was no requirement for him to be commissioned to join the RAF, plenty of other ranks were transferred to the Royal Flying Corps: as it was an Army corps. On formation, the RAF also received many Royal Navy (+ reserves) & Army other ranks.
