Remembered Today:

Movement of artillery from the Somme

Hi.

Sadly lacking in Trench Maps, can anybody help me on this location of a movement north, from the Somme, July 1916.

This refers to an artillery brigade moving to new positions at Marles-les-Mines to the south-west of Bethune and then forward once again.

Initially under command of 16th Divisional Artillery, they then move to the 8th Divisional Artillery early August 1916.

Last location given is:

Sheet 36 (France), Annequin, and, even this may be incorrect as i have had 'nightmares' deciphering locations in the War Diary.

G76 90.15

Just to explain, the move forward was 'complex' to say the least, picking up guns from I.O.M. Workshops on the way. The logistical operation as regards the latter requires some further research as regards Ruitz, Labeuvriere etc.

Kindest regards,

Chris.

Annequin can be located on 36bNE2 Beuvry see screen shot, attached.

I'm no expert on this but I believe the 1:40,000 sheets were divided into 24 x 6,000 yard squares lettered A to X. Each of these 24 squares was sub-divided into 36 x 1,000 yard squares numbered 1 to 36, which were again sub-divided into 4 x 500 yard squares lettered a to d. Consequently, I don't understand where the 76 comes from.

Annequin itself, is at F 29 d on the attached.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve.

Many thanks for posting the map, much appreciated.

I will re-check the War Diary for the grid reference.

All the best.

Chris.
