westkent78 Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 The attached is a postcard taken at the end of September 1914 in the St. Albans area when parts of 47th Division were inspected by Kitchener one week and Lord Roberts the next. The sender indicates the subject to be Kitchener, and I could see that the rider on the left might be "K". But what are your thoughts? Terry_Reeves Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 Agreed, Kitchener is the man on the left. TR
squirrel Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 One of the other two may be Lt General Sir Charles Barter GOC 47th Division 1914-1916.
Nigel Marshall Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 When did Sir Douglas Haig go over to France? The chap mounted on the middle horse is a dead ringer for him. Cheers, Nigel

Guest Rundberg Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 Haig went to France 14 August and to my knowledge he wasn´t back in England before the second half of November. Otherwise my 2 cents would have been on Haig in the middle. Cheers, Chris

Cheers, Nigel Haig went to France with the BEF on August 15 and on 14 September was in the thick of it on the advance to the Aisne. The close up shows a bit too much moustache for him. westkent78 Posted 14 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 14 April , 2010 Thanks all for confirming that it is Kitchener. Now to see if I can track down a photo of Barter- it would certainly seem to make sense he'd be there. Does anyone have a picture of Lord Roberts in 1914 for comparison? Staffsyeoman Posted 14 April , 2010 Share Posted 14 April , 2010 I think both of them are rather too 'chunky' (shall I put it) for 'Bobs' Roberts and the officer in the middle looks too grey-haired for Haig.
