Remembered Today:

Irish Guards at Limburg POW Camp

I don't have any reference books on specifically the Irish Guards so am struggling a bit here

3152. Private F Sewell

3964. Private. M O'Toole

were certainly in the Irish Brigade, and I am looking for anyone with a list of Irish Guards POWs that may be able to either tell me more about these two, or lead me to any others.

I do not have Kipling's book, but I suspect that it does not go into this aspect of the guards history, but please correct me if I am wrong.

On the 29th January 1919 a Captain Reynolds, on behalf of the Officer in charge Records, Irish Guards, provided a list of names of members of the regiment who had been taken prisoner up to the 25th December 1914. This was in connection with elegibility for Princess Mary's Christmas gift.

The names and details of two men have been overtyped as if to remove them from the list however their details are still decipherable:

3?64 Gdsn M O'Toole Limburg

3152 Gdsn F Sewell Gefl?? Zossen

No comment or reason for this action appears in the list.

Thanks very much for that , its a really useful input.

It would look from that as if they are the only two who joined Casement from the Irish Guards

Amusing really that no regiment really wants to admit that they had men defecting to Casement.

Does your list have anything on

1537 Private Daniel Murphy in Irish Guards

His MIC gives him as POW, and I think that it is this man who reports the death of an Irish Brigade member in Munich in Feb 1919. I am looking for any clues that might link him to Irish Brigade.

Yes he's on the list but seems he might be Scottish or at least lived there:

1537 Gdsn D Murphy

Home Address: Barcould Street, Farm Cross, Rutherglen

Thanks for the address

Being Scottish never stopped anyone signing up for the Irish Brigade! How many non Irish joined is one of the things I am trying to establish. Mind you "Daniel Murphy" is hardly Scots either!

Would you have any idea on the rough enlistment date of a man with the service no 1537 in Irish Guards ?

Sorry but I have no idea. I'm not an Irish Guards specialist just an inveterate collector of lists of names which I hope might be useful one day!
