David_Ellis Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 One of my great uncles, Pte John L Brown 5th Btn AIF S/N 3729 was reported KIA on 25/7/16 at Pozieres. On his war record it states: "Buried in the vicinity of Pozieres, Map Ref 5YD SE X 5 L" I am not totally sure about the "L" at the end, the hand writing is very hard to read. He is now buried in the British Cemetery Pozieres Grave 17, Plot 3, Row 0 One of my goals in life is to visit his grave. A map showing the location of his last action would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Dave.
CROONAERT Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 "Buried in the vicinity of Pozieres, Map Ref 5YD SE X 5 L" I am not totally sure about the "L" at the end, the hand writing is very hard to read. The reference will actually be 57D SE X 5 C (though the 'C' could be either A, B or D, but C looks most likely to be the one that could be most easily mistaken for an L) dave
larney Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 Here's a scan of a section of a German map- I'll attach a section of a British map in the next post. SteveJ.
CROONAERT Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 The reference will actually be 57D SE X 5 C ...placing him 'somewhere' in this square (immediately SE of Pozieres)...
larney Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 Dave, Here's a scan from a British map- The layout of the village is similar now as it was then. The map reference is 57D SE by the way Dave (the Y is an error). All the best, SteveJ.

David_Ellis Posted 7 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 7 April , 2010 Thank you all very much for your speedy replies and for setting me straight on the map reference mistake. I will post the image from the war record later, maybe one of you may be able to decipher the last letter 100%. Cheers Dave.
