gdawson Posted 5 April , 2010 Share Posted 5 April , 2010 Once a soldier had recovered from wounds, was it customary to be sent back to his original COY or would he have been re-assigned to a different COY who needed re-staffing? My Grandfather was originally with 11th Field COY through at least July 1915, at this time we have record of him being in hospital in France. In looking at the war diary, 11th Field COY had been the foundation for the formation of the first Tunnelling COY (170th). It is possible that my Grandfather may have gained some experience with the 170th prior to being wounded. On leaving hospital, would it have been likely that he would have been sent back to 11th Field COY or could he have been assigned to 180th Tunnelling COY who were being formed around that time? We have record of him finishing his service with 180th Tunnelling COY. Regards, Greg
sotonmate Posted 6 April , 2010 Share Posted 6 April , 2010 Greg Doubtless his place in 170 TC would have been taken by another soldier as they probably needed all the tunnellers they could get. It seems only reasonable that once fit again he goes to the next most needy place. We see this often in several arms of the service.
