johnnie Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 I was wondering if anybody might be able to tell me where the 10th Btn DLI were at the end on June 1915 as I am trying to find out more about the loss of Pte J W Ramsey (no. 21474) who was killed on the 29th June 1915. I think they might have been in the trenches for the first time, however I am not 100% sure, and any help or information would be great. River97 Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 John, Had a look on Ancestry and these not a lot there. I think you may be right about being in the trenches for the first time as John arrived in France on 21 May 1915. The battalion war diary may be able to shed some light on the question. They should be stored a Kew, or there may be someone here who has a copy. Cheers Andy.
CROONAERT Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 It was their 3rd stint in the FL trenches. Nothing really mentioned in the diary for that date...just mentions a 'fairly quiet day' and the fact that they were relieved that night by the 7RB who were late. johnnie Posted 1 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 1 April , 2010 Many thanks for the replies. I have just had a look at British Battalions on the Western Front and it has the following: "Aldershot. Part of 43rd Bridage, 14th (Light) Division. To Folkstone 21st May and sailed for Boulogne. Moved by train to Cassel 25th and from there took over billets at Volkerinckhove. Moved forward later, reaching Bailleul 31st May, then began work digging trenches. To Dickenbusch the St. Eloi sector. Began instruction in trenches west of Wytschaete on 12th June." Dave. Do you have the war diary for the date I am interested in? Were they in the trenches in the Wytschaete sector when he died? Jonathan

Give me a while (got a lot of requests on the go at the moment) and i'll post the relevant extract here. dave

johnnie Posted 3 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 3 April , 2010 Many thanks for the information. It seems he died of wounds, and I wonder if the wounds may have been recieved during the night of the 28th/29th, and if he was a member of D Coy.
