gunner245 Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 Hi All, A question for the Cavalry Buffs,My Grandfather was a 6th inniskilling reservist mobilised 1914 and posted to the 2DG, His original service no,was 5790 this stayed the same with 2DG`s. At some date during the war (not known) he went back to his parent Regt. 6th innis.DG`s then at some point was transferred to the Corp. of Dragoons and given No.D/21192. As i haven`t got his service record is there anyway of finding out when (approximately) these transfers took place. Mel.
Ron Clifton Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 Hello Mel He wouldn't have been transferred to the CorpS of Dragoons: he would already have been in it. All Dragoon Guard and Dragoon regiments formed a single grouping for personnel records purposes, including postings. Similarly, all Regular Hussar regiments belonged to the Corps of Hussars, and all Regular Lancer regiments belonged to the Corps of Lancers. Hi Ron, Why would he have been given a different number at some stage. Mel.
Ron Clifton Posted 1 April , 2010 Share Posted 1 April , 2010 Hello Mel The most likely reason is that his peacetime enlistment (twelve years with the Colours and in the Reserve) had expired, and either he re-enlisted or was retained under conscription, and therefore his "terms of service" would have changed. But this is only a guess, and other Pals may come up with a different reason. It is also possible that somehow his old number had been allotted twice. gunner245 Posted 1 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 1 April , 2010 Ron, In the War & Victory medal roll for the corp, of Dragoons it lists him as (Dis.Termn.of Engagement.22.5.19). His original enlistment date was 4/10/06 and he was (struck of strength) as the regimental journal puts it 28/11/1913 To Reserve. Mel.
