Hi,

I would like know what cap and unit badges would have been worn by a private in the 13bn Durham Light Infantary in 1917-18.

Does anyone have any examples that they could scan for me?

Many thanks,

Keith

As John says, a normal DLI badge, description thus :- a bugle with strings taken upwards into the base of an Imperial crown. Within the strings the letters DLI. Ralph.

Hi John,

Just part of my search for information concening Pte Thomas Rollett MM. You very kindly provided me recently with copies of the Bn War Diary for the period when he won his MM.

My post under Units & Formations of 21/03/10 refers.

Still trying to find you a photograph!

I have now establish from his service records that he won the MM on the 20 September 1917.

I was also interested to learn what badges he would have worn. Thank you for the copy of the Battle Patch. I cant quite make out the colours. Are they red and green?

It would be great if someone could scan for me a copy of the cap badge.

Many thanks,

Keith

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the advise and the link.

Would the brass badge be the correct one for a private in 1917-18 ?

Regards,

Keith

Don't know!

My area of interest is the rifles regiments, but I follow LI topics too because of the overlap.

With the rifles regiments, the KRRC wore a blackened cap badge, but the Rifle Brigade was "shiny".

You'll need to do some digging - the answer's probably out there - or wait for the DLI specialists to spot this topic.

Cheers,

Mark

No it would not. He shoudl be wearing a nickel (white metal) badge. The only exception would be a 6th Bn Territorial who if he had an old pre1916 badge might still be wearing a blackened brass one.

Was there a DLI Economy Brass badge?

If so he could have worn one in 1916/7.

No there was not. While all brass abdges can be found they are either fake, cast brass bazaar badges or TF ones with the blackening removed. being all w/m and single piece the DLI was not authorised for production in all brass. There have been several threads on this showing the AO concerned.
