hazie Posted 30 March , 2010 Share Posted 30 March , 2010 My ancestor Joseph Dunn no. 12304 served in the above regiment. I have traced some surviving army papers and these together with details on CWGC tell me he landed in France 17 Jul 1915 and was killed in action on 10 Oct 1915. Theatre of war France & Flanders. I have been googling for more details about where or what battle he was in when he died. I have found nothing mentioning specifically the 7th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. This regiment plus others seem to have made up the 56th Brigade under control of the 19th (Western) Division. If I am correct in the above, my ancestor fell during action in the Battle of Loos. This would seem to be born out by his grave being at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebou. I see this is in the vicinity of Neuve-Chapelle and La Bassee. Although I have found reference to actions around the date of 10 Oct 1915 under the Battle of Loos, I have been unable to find any mention of either this regiment, the 56th Brigade or indeed the 19th Division. As I have no experience at all of military matters I am worried I may have misunderstood. I am wondering whether anyone has access to details of Loyal North Lancashire regimental history, diaries or any knowledge that can help me. johndavidswarbrick Posted 31 March , 2010 Share Posted 31 March , 2010 The war diary for the 7th Battalion [As part of the 56 Infantry Brigade] is listed at the National Archives at Kew - WO 95/2080 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...;accessmethod=0 It doesn't appear to be online - so it's either a visit to Kew or get someone to look at it on your behalf, Dave Swarbrick
hazie Posted 7 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 7 April , 2010 Many thanks to you both for responding, I have checked out the various links. I live too far north to make a visit to Nat. Archives viable. I am not sure whether it is the intention to eventually make all the war diaries available online if so, I'll check from time to time. In meantime, I've sent off a request for an estimate for an extract of the week of interest to see how much Nat. Archives will charge - if there are not too many pages, it might not be too expensive. connaughtranger Posted 8 April , 2010 Share Posted 8 April , 2010 Hi The 19th Division at that time was holding the line from Vine Street, Richebourg l'Avoué Map 36 SW3 S 10 c 3.5 to Orkney Road, east of Festubert S 27 central. It narrowed it down a little...at least Regards Martin

hazie Posted 2 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 2 May , 2010 Hello Graeme, Many thanks for the Regimental Extracts. I am very grateful. National Archives were unable to provide me with an estimate to supply a copy of extract from the war diary for 7th Bn Loyal North Lancs. for dates of interest as that requires research. Sorry for the delay in responding, I have been away. Best wishes. Hazie
