Another Royal Irish Rifles Question

Hi

the attached is obviously Royal Irish Rifles in Koln in 1919 Having gone right through "The Occupation of the Rhineland"

the only mention is of 1/Royal Irish, no designation of Rifles, Fusiliers or Regiment.

By the time the book gets to 1929 the Ulster Rifles are mentioned but thats ten years too late.

Can any one confirm that it is 1/R Irish Rif and if so what is the patch at the top of the Riflemans sleeve?

Incidently I have two photos of the DLI in exactly the same place the photographer must have been making a bomb.

Thanks in advance

John

From Falls' history of the Ulster Division, referring to a unit being assigned to occupation duties in Germany:

"The 12th Royal Irish Rifles was chosen, and made up to strength from volunteers of the 1st, and, and 15th battalions of that regiment. On March the 2nd it entrained at Mouscron, where the whole Division, less the Artillery, was now concentrated, and proceeded to join the 2nd (now the Light) Division on the Rhine."

Can't make out patch.

Above may help.

Hello, Des is correct in that these men belong to 12th. Battalion R. Irish Rifles as part of the army of occupation of the Rhineland. The flash shown is the 12th. Battalion pale blue semicircle. Brainey.
