zulu45rmcondor Posted 28 March , 2010 Share Posted 28 March , 2010 In the photographs shows John Brennan which we believe was taken in France c1918, appears to be wearing the cap badge of Royal Irish Rifles. We can also see that he has on his left forearm two 'Wounded in Action' stripes. He also has three chevrons on the lower right forearm which indicate 'Overseas Service Stripes' These were first awarded in 1918 they were back dated to 1914 and could be worn in combination with Good Conduct Stripes, and were not limited to junior ranks. One Blue Chevron was worn for each year’s service overseas, with a Red Chevron indicating that the soldier went overseas before 31st December 1914. It has also been noted that he may have been attached to HQ, the arm band does give an indication to this. As a clear 'H' can be seen. As for the Tri-angle still no identification of its meaning can be found. We need help in confirming the informaton found to date, and to Id the ARM BAND. John Brennan was said to of been killed during WWI from family stories but we can not fine his death entry, made harder but the fact we dont have a service number for him. Of the 229 John Brennan recorded for WWI I found 47 were killed or died in during the War, I have since reduce these based on when the oversea stripes were introduced. Plus the Age of John he was born in 1892, Still need hlep please

Grovetown Posted 28 March , 2010 Share Posted 28 March , 2010 8/9th RIR wore an inverted triangle; blue left, orange right. Given the tricks played on colours with B&W film, seems possible. The 8th and 9th battalions merged on 29th August 1917. He also seems to have a triangle top of sleeve. If this is blue, like the left hand side of the brassard triangle, this would make him originally 8th Bn. Best wishes, GT.
