Phylly8 Posted 27 March , 2010 Share Posted 27 March , 2010 Hello, I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if anybody had any information regarding soldiers in The Connaught Rangers as I need help finding my Grandfather John Joseph O'Reilly/Reilly b c1894 Ireland possibly Galway. On his marriage certificate (1916) he was John Joseph Reilly, his father - Martin Reilly. His occupation was Corporal Connaught Rangers. His residence was Hill Crest Hospital Coventry. On my Mother's birth certificate (1928) his name was John Joseph O'Reilly. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Phyl

archangel9 Posted 27 March , 2010 Share Posted 27 March , 2010 Phyl, Have you searched the 1911 census of Ireland? Possible - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/page...Derreen/903045/ and there may be others. Is there any other information you can give us? "His residence was Hill Crest Hospital Coventry" possibly recovering from wounds at the time? John

I was hoping to get some info regarding his life as a soldier and to maybe verify that Martin & Winifred are his parents. All the medal cards on The National Archives are for Privates and he was a Corporal. Thank you for your help, Phyl
archangel9 Posted 27 March , 2010 Share Posted 27 March , 2010 From those lists of possibles in the MIC's you can discount - Medal card of O'Reilly, John Corps: Connaught Rangers Regiment No: 4484 Rank: Private... as he was killed in 1917. "All the medal cards on The National Archives are for Privates and he was a Corporal" But did he serve in a theatre of war as a Corporal? If he didn't it wouldn't be recorded on the MIC. Do you have Ancestry access? Plenty of John/Joseph Reilly's/O'Reilly's service and pension records there. But the odds are against finding your man among those. John Yes I have Ancestry access but haven't found him there after trawling through pages and pages of documents. Well that's one less John O'Reilly I have to check out, thanks again John, Phyl
mhifle Posted 27 March , 2010 Share Posted 27 March , 2010 Hi, I have found a Private John Reilly aged 18 from Galway, Single, General Labourer on the 1911 Census at the Connaught Rangers Depot, Galway. This would have him being born in 1893. I think his regimental number is 10108 and he would be a Regular undergoing his training at the Depot in April 1911. This might be your man.
