Hi All,

I'm looking for information on this soldier. I can't find an MIC for him.

CWGC have his unit as:- No3 R.A Training Regt.

He is buried in Melcombe Regis, Dorset.

Date of death 10.03.19

Is it possible he didn't serve abroad? Or do I need to re look at Ancestry?

Regards

Cam.

Cam

I found no Medal Index Card for this name, number, unit and rank. Being a Sergeant suggests previous service,so he might have been a regular pre-war and re-joined in a home service/training capacity.

I also found no service record, but my track record there is not 100% !

Hi Cam,

Your man's service number suggests he joined the RGA sometime during the spring of 1907, so he was indeed a pre-war regular.

cheers

Hi Steve,

Thanks for that.

He must have left after his service, as he was a Police Constable

with the Glamorgan Constabulary before the war. A bit more digging to do I think!

Regards

Cam.

If you subscribe to Ancestry then looking at the records of 26464 George David Longhurst will give you a likely scenario for his pre war service.

Depending on how much research you would like to do there is obviously tracking down any war diaries that may still exist, whether for the battery or the higher HAG/Brigade. I could also give you a list of some of the gunners who served with the 35th Heavy Battery and whose records have survived. I know someone else who could probably give you nearly the full nominal roll for you to work through if you have the desire.

Kevin

Edit; Even better to see that his records have survived. Should give even more info.

Hi Kevin,

Did you say his service record survives?

I've been looking on Ancestry and can't find it, I can usually track them down

but I've had no luck with this.

Hi again Cam,

Yes, he's there under the service records - search for Henry George Evans and use RGA as the regiment. Ancestry has made a mistake on his number, giving it as 38474 (probably reflecting the damage to the original papers). Seems he attested in March 1907.

cheers

We are talking Ancestry here.

In the WW1 Service Records just put name, Henry George Evans. Scroll down until you see the records for Ashtead, Surrey...38474 and ??74. Quite a few pages.
