Remembered Today:

A company 7th Yorkshire Regiment

Planning my forthcoming trip to France, I intend to visit the Ficourt area. Research has shown that the above unit were instructed not to take part in the attack at Fricourt. Their commander, Major Kent ordered them to attack despite their orders.

Major Kent survived until May 1918, does anyone know or surmise why he ordered this attack ?

Bill,

I haven't any more information, I only found out about it this week. I was hoping this point had been debated before, although I cannot find anything on a search.

This company advanced at 7.45 a.m. on its own and was almost completely destroyed by a single machine gun. It was not due to have attacked until the afternoon operation to clear Fricourt. This advance has never been explained but the Officer commanding seems not to have been penalised.
