Mick D Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 Planning my forthcoming trip to France, I intend to visit the Ficourt area. Research has shown that the above unit were instructed not to take part in the attack at Fricourt. Their commander, Major Kent ordered them to attack despite their orders. Major Kent survived until May 1918, does anyone know or surmise why he ordered this attack ? Mick
bmac Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 I don't believe there has ever been a satisfactory explanation but would be interested to hear otherwise.
Mick D Posted 25 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 25 March , 2010 Bill, I haven't any more information, I only found out about it this week. I was hoping this point had been debated before, although I cannot find anything on a search. Mick
bmac Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 I vaguely remember asking the same question once with no answer then either. If you are going to Fricourt there is an interesting piece over on the WFA forum (it may be hiding here as well): http://frontforum.westernfrontassociation....;hilit=fricourt

joseph Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 Mick, What is the story on the attack by A Company 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment? Regards Charles
bmac Posted 26 March , 2010 Share Posted 26 March , 2010 This company advanced at 7.45 a.m. on its own and was almost completely destroyed by a single machine gun. It was not due to have attacked until the afternoon operation to clear Fricourt. This advance has never been explained but the Officer commanding seems not to have been penalised.
