another impossible question

Pals

Last time I asked an impossible question and was amazed by the response. So, I have another for you. Again, this is a man who is on the War Memorial but I can't find him in the usual places. The Memorial Book for locals list him as being a private in the London Regiment and living in Wells. Any suggestions as to who he may be would be gratefully valued.

Yours in hope,

Sue

Hi Sue,

A sweep of CWGC for an "A J Taylor" 1914-1918 only brought up this man in the London Regiment:-

Name: TAYLOR, ARTHUR JOHN

Initials: A J

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: London Regiment

Unit Text: 1st/20th Bn.

Age: 36

Date of Death: 01/10/1916

Service No: 5309

Additional information: Son of the late Charles William and Maria Taylor, of 171A, Cheltenham Rd., Bristol.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 9 D 9 C 13 C and 12 C.

Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

Given the parents' location, I think this could be your man?

Sue,

This may prove to be a bit of a sticky one. His MIC only shows service in the London Regt.

I can't seem to find any service records either, not surprised really.

By that there are a few 'Arthur John Taylor' in the list of service records, however, none have a link with Wells.

Cheers Andy.

His father Charles William was born in Wells, according to the 1901 census.

(Arthur is indexed as Arthur I. at 171a Cheltenham Rd, Bristol St Andrew's.

Nor does any man by the name of Taylor listed in "Soldiers Died" [... have any connection with Bristol ...]

Here's the SDGW entry for the AJ Taylor that Pal Verrico's already found on CWGC ...

Name: Arthur John TAYLOR

Birth Place: Islington, London

Residence: Holborn

Death Date: 1 Oct 1916

Enlistment Location: Stockwell

Rank: Private

Regiment: London Regiment

Battalion: 20th (County of London) Battalion (Blackheath and Woolwich).

Number: 5309

Type of Casualty: Killed in action

See here (requires Ancestry membership): AJ Taylor in Ancestry version of SDGW

Birthplace of Islington, Residence in Holborn and Enlistment in Stockwell don't sit well with parents in Bristol though. Looks like the family must have spent some time in London before the father returned to his native Bristol/Wells.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks again to everyone.

It seems that not only his father was born in Wells but his mother was born only a few miles outside the city. His father died in 1904 and so I presume his mother returned to her place of birth, so to speak.

Thanks again.

Sue,

Been working back through the genealogy with mixed success.

I tracked Arthur, his father, Charles William TAYLOR, and his mother, Maria TAYLOR, nee BOYCE.

1901 Census

171A Cheltenham Road, Bristol

Charles W TAYLOR; Head; married; 59yrs (~1842); Living on own means; b. Wells, Somerset

Maria TAYLOR; wife; married; 58yrs (~1843); b. Coaley [sic: should read Coxley], Somerset

Arthur J TAYLOR; son; single; 21yrs (~1880); Tobacconist & Hairdresser (Employer); b. St Mark's, Bristol

Gertrude M TAYLOR; daughter; single; 15yrs (~1886); b. St Philip's, Bristol

Sarah BOYCE; sister in law; single; 50yrs (~1851); b. Coaley [sic: should read Coxley], Somerset

1891 Census

45 Seymour Road, Bristol

Charles W TAYLOR; Head; married; 50yrs (~1841); Cattle Salesman's Assistant; b. Wells, Somerset

Maria TAYLOR; wife; married; 50yrs (~1841); b. Wells, Somerset

Arthur TAYLOR; son; single; 11yrs (~1880); scholar; b. Bristol

Gertrude TAYLOR; daughter; single; 5yrs (~1886); scholar; b. Bristol

1881 Census

Not found :-(

Q1 1871 Wells Marriage Register

Charles William TAYLOR

Maria BOYCE

1871 Census

34 High Street, Wells (adjacent to Somerset Hotel)

Charles W TAYLOR; Head; married; 29yrs (~1842); Butcher; b. Wells, Somerset

Maria TAYLOR; wife; married; 30yrs (~1841); b. Coxley, Somerset

Sarah MERRIFIELD; servant; single; 12yrs (~1859); General servant; b. Coxley, Somerset

1861 Census

Not found & no Taylors appear to be at the 1851 address in Southover.

1851 Census

Southover, Wells (penultimate household before start of Silver Street)

Robert TAYLOR; Head; married; 47yrs (~1804); Butcher

Elizabeth TAYLOR; wife; married; 46yrs (~1805)

Henry TAYLOR; son; 15yrs (~1836); Father's Assistant

Sarah TAYLOR; daughter; 13yrs (~1838)

Charles TAYLOR; son; 10yrs (~1841); scholar

Richard TAYLOR; son; 7yrs (~1844); scholar

Emily TAYLOR; daughter; 5yrs (~1846); scholar

Martha TAYLOR; daughter; 3yrs (~1848); scholar

All born Wells, Somerset. All children unmarried.

- presumably Frederick, Matilda, Elizabeth (Jnr), Priscilla and Henrietta all left Household or away from home

1841 Census

Southover, Wells (last household before start of Silver Street)

Robert TAYLOR; 32yrs (~1809); Butcher

Elizabeth TAYLOR; 31yrs (~1810)

Frederick TAYLOR; 15yrs (~1826)

Matilda TAYLOR; 13yrs (~1828)

Elizabeth TAYLOR; 10yrs (~1831)

Priscilla TAYLOR; 7yrs (~1834)

Henrietta TAYLOR; 6yrs (~1835)

Sarah TAYLOR; 3yrs (~1838)

Charles TAYLOR; 8 months (~1840)

Not much luck on the BOYCE family except that they were from Coxley which is just outside Wells, as you presumably already know!

To save other Pals work, I did find a false lead in the 1881 Census ...

163 Drummond Street, Somers Town, St Pancras, London

Charles TAYLOR; Head; 29yrs; Herbalist; born Bristol, Somerset

Lucy Maria TAYLOR; wife; 27yrs; born Bristol, Glos.

Francis Chas TAYLOR; son; 1 month; born Middlesex

E.G.S. STEVENS; brother-in-law; 17yrs; born Bristol, Glos

Got quite excited about this lot as they were exactly in the N central London area that Arthur's SDGW leads point to, also they were married in Bristol in 1879. However this same household appears in the 1901 Census in Mangotsfield, Glos. with Charles as Shopkeeper (Herbal Chemist) so they cannot be the same Charles & Maria as Arthur's parents. There's a remote possibility they may belong to the extended Taylor family and might point to an occasional London connection, but someone will have to do a lot more donkeywork to take that further.

HTH

Mark

There was a Charles William Taylor who was one of the 2 Wells MP's in the late 1780's or thereabouts, connected to Dulcote, I believe.... could this be a connection?

Sorry but getting back just to 1841 was quite effort enough for me! :D

I'll pass the torch to someone else for 1780.
