John S Posted 23 March , 2010 Share Posted 23 March , 2010 Pte Gilbert is a relative of a close friend who has no information about him. His number was 39328 and he served with the 9 Battalion KOYLI. ‘Soldiers Died’ says ‘formerly 2278 TR Battalion’ and his MIC states ‘presumed dead’ and gives only his medal entitlement. He is commemorated at Tynecot. I know 64 Brigade fought in the 2nd Battle of Kemmel around Kemmel/La Clytte at the time of his death. If any one can add any information as to Pte Gilbert eg date enrolled, date went to France, what does 2278 TR signify and more details of the KOYLI involvement in the 2nd Battle of Kemmel I would be most grateful. Thanks in anticipation Regards John
jwp2007 Posted 23 March , 2010 Share Posted 23 March , 2010 Hi John, the TR battalion stands for training reserve, Soldiers did their training in these battalions and were then posted to other regiments, the following link to the long, long trail explains about the TR battalions in great detail : http://www.1914-1918.net/training_reserve.htm regards, John.
