Mystery Irish badge

Hi

Found this badge in a box of bits & bobs at a car boot sale this morning. I have tried looking it up in my Cap Badge / Collar Badge books but no luck. Not sure now if it's military as there is no crown on the badge but has 2 lugs on the back. Anyone have any sugestions as to what the badge might be very much appreciated.

Hi Patrick

Thanks for that, at least it gives me something to go on, as I've looked through my books and couldn't find anything without a crown.

Cheers

Rob

I think you are right - It should have a crown - sorry!

The Society of United Irishmen, a republican movement which emerged in the 1790s, used a gold harp on a green field (the Maid without a Crown) so it could be a republican badge???

Wonder why it has a loop on the bottom of the piece - safety chain?

Trouble is, there are so many types and variations on this badge it's a complete minefield. My only suggestion for the hook is that it may be a retainer for chains as seen on a Rifles officers' crossbelt.
