biffrocks Posted 21 March , 2010 Share Posted 21 March , 2010 Hi Found this badge in a box of bits & bobs at a car boot sale this morning. I have tried looking it up in my Cap Badge / Collar Badge books but no luck. Not sure now if it's military as there is no crown on the badge but has 2 lugs on the back. Anyone have any sugestions as to what the badge might be very much appreciated. ">
biffrocks Posted 21 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 21 March , 2010 I have attached a photo of the back of the badge, to see if this helps anyone with advice. ">

biffrocks Posted 21 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 21 March , 2010 ' Maid of Erin' - Collar Badge of 8th Irish Hussars?? Possibly? Hi Patrick Thanks for that, at least it gives me something to go on, as I've looked through my books and couldn't find anything without a crown. Cheers Rob
Patrick ODwyer Posted 21 March , 2010 Share Posted 21 March , 2010 I think you are right - It should have a crown - sorry! The Society of United Irishmen, a republican movement which emerged in the 1790s, used a gold harp on a green field (the Maid without a Crown) so it could be a republican badge??? squirrel Posted 21 March , 2010 Share Posted 21 March , 2010 Wonder why it has a loop on the bottom of the piece - safety chain?
Staffsyeoman Posted 22 March , 2010 Share Posted 22 March , 2010 Trouble is, there are so many types and variations on this badge it's a complete minefield. My only suggestion for the hook is that it may be a retainer for chains as seen on a Rifles officers' crossbelt.
