Can anyone help me place this young soldier's uniform? I know he served in The Scottish Rifles in WWI in his late thirties, but this was taken much earlier. The 1901 census has him stationed at Aldershot with S Battery, Royal Horse Artilliery age 23. Any ideas or information much appreciated.

Hi - and welcome to the Forum!

Is this him?

Name: Charles H Saunders

Regiment or Corps: Scottish Rifles

Regimental Number: 17396

If so, some service records survive from 1914:-

Name: Charles Henry Saunders

Estimated birth year: abt 1873

Age at Enlistment: 41

Residence: 452 Wick Road Hackney, London NE

Document Year: 1914

Regimental Number: 17396

Regiment Name: Scottish Rifles

Under "have you ever served" it says "Yes. Scottish Rifles. Discharged. Time expired 15-Aug-1906".

That is not a Cameronian soldier. He is a fusilier judging by his collar. The grenade is far too large for the RA one and the Cameronian (Scottish rifles) did not wear them.

Agree with Max and a closer look at his helmet appears to show a horse hair plume being worn on it's right hand side. Enlarging the collar badges and helmet could help us out here, but the size of those collar badges to me would indicate "Royal Fusiliers" and possibly post-War.
