lynedmonds Posted 17 March , 2010 Share Posted 17 March , 2010 Hi I'm trying to help someone whose grandfather received the military medal during his time in the 5th battalion Connaught Rangers - I suspect around the time of Le Cateau as he was wounded there in Oct 1918. I would like to know if he is mentioned in the diaries - can anyone help please? thanks Lyn
archangel9 Posted 18 March , 2010 Share Posted 18 March , 2010 Lyn, I don't have the War Diary but I do have the Jourdain and Fraser history, Volume 3 which deals with the 5th and 6th Bn.s. He (18244, Pte. Henry Graham) is not mentioned unfortunately. John
mhifle Posted 18 March , 2010 Share Posted 18 March , 2010 Hi, Here is his London Gazette entry and it has him with the 5th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers? 18244 Pte. Graham, H., 5th Bn. (Dublin) Regards Mark http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/313...upplements/6043
archangel9 Posted 18 March , 2010 Share Posted 18 March , 2010 Must be a mistake in LG - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=2 Also Lyn has this topic - http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...p;#entry1377329 John
lynedmonds Posted 20 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 20 March , 2010 Hi John - thanks for checking re any mention of Pte Graham. Mark - thanks also for your assistance, but interestingly the Gazette is incorrect - he was with the 5th Connaught in 1918 and the RDF prior to that. Kind regards Lyn
Patrick ODwyer Posted 21 March , 2010 Share Posted 21 March , 2010 I believe MMs were stamped to the 'parent' unit so perhaps he was only 'attached' to the Connaughts? I know that a 20th Hussars who served only with the RHG in the Great War still had his MM stamped to 20th Hussars.
lynedmonds Posted 21 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 21 March , 2010 thanks for that suggestion - but do you know whether his number would change for an attachment? His MIC has RDF first and then Connaughts - each with a different number. Lyn
Patrick ODwyer Posted 22 March , 2010 Share Posted 22 March , 2010 If he has a new number he was almost certainly transfered (not attached) to Connaughts. Could the ward have been belated? Sorry - not much help!
