Hello

I have recently brought a trio marked up to a Harold Brearley l/28064

I have downloaded Harold Brearley's service records and am intrigued to know more about his service.

Harold Brearley enlisted 27-05-1915 aged 20 into the 168th Huddersfield brigade Royal Artillery, his address as 20 Woodside Crescent, Halifax. His service papers show he was with the ‘D’ battery and then ‘A’ battery.

He enlisted as a Gunner and rose to Battery Quarter Master Serjeant by 09-11-1916, within 18 months. Then leaving on a commission into the regular army august 1918.

The part i am particularly interested in is the rise from gunner to Battery Quarter Master Serjeant in less than 18 months at the age of 21. excuse my ignorance but i always thought of quarter masters and such ranks being older soldiers?

If any body has any further details on this soldier i would be very interested to know more, or indeed how common gunner to battery quarter master serjeant was at such a young age?

I assume he had 'something about him' and obviously worked had to reach the rank.
