Not sure if there is anything in the sequence of regimental numbers but my grandfather was number 47350. He was in the 26th Division and had the similar medals. Maybe a Pal on the site can help with number sequences.

Luke,

You may be able to find some info here. I believe the site and blog are the work of a fellow forumite.

Cheers Andy.

  • 1 month later...

Here is his MIC - if this doesn't come out well can post it up larger. What does his *A/Bomber under rank driver mean? Artillery Bomber? Or seeing he was a driver - Ambulance??

The old style card tell me anything?

Hi

I used this site to trace details of my cousin's father-in-law who was a driver in the RFA

Your soldier's regiment may not be covered by this site.

However it may give some helpful clues.

http://www.denniscorbett.com/241.html.

I did get a complete set of service papers from Ancestry for Driver Mitchell.

Sadly I no longer subscribe so can't check him out.

Good luck

Roger

Hi Luke,

He was a Driver of a horse team pulling a gun or limber or cart, but then became Acting Bombardier.

The RFA/179 B is a medal roll reference not his battery number.

His service record does not appear to have survived. His medal card tells us he went to France on 26 Aug 1915.

Try looking for men with similar service numbers who went to France at the same time.

Thanks Roger and David,

I have ancestry and all there id for him is his MIC...unfortunately.

I agree with David that RFA/179 B is for looking him up on the medal rolls...I have never heard that it relates to their battalion also.

Thanks for the info about what a driver would have done, i thought of him as driving a car....not driving horse drawn equipment!

Do we agree that the *A/bombr under rank just under driver is acting bombadier or is it artillery bombadier?

Will have a look at that link you gave me Roger and let you know if a find anything...trouble is i have no idea what battalion he was in? Only that his entry into the war was in France 28/6/1915...anyone know what RFA battalions entered into the war on this date? Or help me with anything else?

Luke
