Mark Hone Posted 13 March , 2010 Share Posted 13 March , 2010 Could anyone tell me the name of the CO of 18th RF in January 1916? I am trying to decipher it from the signature on a photocopy of a condolence letter. It looks like 'Henry Scots John' but I may be wrong! Many thanks. SteveE Posted 14 March , 2010 Share Posted 14 March , 2010 Mark Haven't got the relevant page of the Army List so don't know about 1916 but Colonel Lord Henry Scott was CO when the Battalion was formed in 1914, could it be him? Mark Hone Posted 14 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 14 March , 2010 I suspect it is. I wonder how usual it was for battalion COs to hand-write letters of condolence for private soldiers, rather than delegating it to company commanders etc? Admittedly this was during a 'quiet' period (January 1916). The Public Schools' Battalion was also, of course, a rather unusual outfit in terms of social composition. I wonder if this made a difference?
