perhaps it was the spire on the right he was referring to...it appears to be intact when this photo was taken

I think the one is meant is the last corner spire of the Belfry tower. (Southeast corner)

This pic is May 1915 (or soon after). Of the ones I have of the Cloth Hall, it is the one nearest to September 1915. That corner spire is still there.

The nearest one I have of the Belfry tower after Sept. 1915, is March 1916, and that corner spire is gone.
