Hi all, I'm guessing you experts can help me out as usual!!

I've been asked to find out any info regarding a distant releative who served in the Royal Engineers. He was 258379 sapper David Benjamin Redding who was admitted to hospital with influenza and pneumonia on 15/12/1918. It looks like he was transferred to England on 04/01/1919 to 3 Australian General Hospital then transferred to Aldershot Military Isolation Hospital on 14/01/1919.

He served in France from 24/02/1917 until 04/01/1919

On 31/08/1918 he was wounded and admitted to what looks like 1/3 HFA and discharged on 28/09/1918.

On 31/10/1918 he joined 212 Fd Coy RE.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on which unit(s) he served with in France until he joined 212 Fd Coy in 1918 and where 212 Fd Coy served during his time with them.

Also can anyone shed any light on 3 Australian General Hospital and whereabouts it was?

Once again, many thanks in advance for any info whatsoever that can be found!!!

Best Regards

Stewart

3 Australian Gen Hospital was at ABBEVILLE.

1/3 HFA is the Highland Field Ambulance attached to 51 Division at the time you quote,as were the Field Companies RE 400 and 404 ( your man might have been withone of these) .

31 Aug 1918 saw 51 Division at the end of the Battle of the Scarpe,so he was probably in that area.

212 Field Company was with 33 Division,so he seems to have changed Divisions after recovering from wounds.

He enlisted into the Inland Waterways Transport in early 1917 with the number 258379, and was renumbered in early 1918 with the number WR / 505792.

He was then transferred to the RE railways, joining the Foreway Depot on 14.4.18. with the number WR /284112. He joined 7 Foreway Company on 18.5.18. The Foreway companies operated the narrow gauge lines from the bulk distribution points, up to the rearward trenches, using small tractors. He was a fitter's labourer by trade, so it is easy to see how was allocated to the IWT and the Foreways organisation. On 13.10.18, he was transferred to 212 Field Company and had his original number reinstated
