10th Bn - 01/11/1914 to 31/12/1915 and 01/06/1916 to 30/09/1919

13th Bn - 26/09/1915 - 31/03/1919

18th Bn - 31/07/1917 - 25/09/1917

I would be grateful for 10th movements January to end April 1918. L/cpl W Champness Y Co KIA 10 April 1918. Remembered on Loos Memorial.

Billeted in BEAUMETZ-LEZ-AIRE

The whole of January seems to have been spent on training, etc. Casualties for the month – NIL

10/02/1918

Battalion arrived at LAPUGNOY.

12/02/1918

Moved to VERQUIN

14/02/1918

Moved to LA PREOL and into Brigade Reserve

25/02/1918

Rejoined 166 Inf Bde and moved to positions north of LA BASSEE canal.

26/02/1918

Enemy artillery activity

27/02/1918

Trench mortars fired by enemy, one OR casualty (wounded)

04/03/1918

Bn relieved and moved to support at GORRE

07/03/1918

Heavy bombardment and Bn “Stood To” in TUNING FORK locality. Later returned to billets at GORRE. Enemy bombardment, one OR slightly wounded.

14/03/1918

Artillery bombardment and reply by our guns. 2 OR killed.

15/03/1918

Heavy enemy artillery. Bn stood down 1 OR killed, 2 OR died of wounds, 1 OR wounded.

20/03/1918

Bn inspected at MESPLAUX

25/03/1918

Ordered to move at midnight to TUNING FORK locality.

27/03/1918

Bn embussed for ANNEQUIN then moved to trenches in VILLAGE LINE and CAMBRIN.

Casualties for month – 4 OR Killed, 1 OR Died of Wounds, 1 Officer, 11 OR wounded.

01/04/1918

Ban was occupying front line and support trenches immediately south of LA BASSEEE CANAL. Heavy enemy artillery.

05/04/1918

Spasmodic shelling

07/04/1918

Bn relieved and proceeded to billets in Le QUESNOY

08/04/1918

Moved to MESPLAUX FARM. Receibed orders to relieve Portugese Div. the following day.

09/04/1918

Heavy enemy bombardment started at 4 a.m. and Bn moved to TUNING FORK locality. Heavy casualties sustained en route. Shelling continued until 9.50 a.m. when enemy attacked along the whole front. On immediate front the attack was unsuccessful but on the left, the front occupied by the Portugese was penetrated and a defensive flank had to be formed. Evening and night were comparatively quiet.

10/04/1918

“Z” Coy attacked three times during the day but the enemy beaten off on each occasion with heavy losses. In the last attack, 2 machine guns and 10 prisoners were captured. During the day, enemy aeroplanes bearing British markings dropped bombs on GORRE.

That’s about it, really. No mention of Walter by name, I’m afraid.

Interestingly, there are several typed reports of the general period 9th-13th April by differing men (not officers), and if you PM me an email address, I’ll send them over to you (but it will be tomorrow).
