Stephen Nulty Posted 11 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 March , 2010 01/01/1918 Billeted in BEAUMETZ-LEZ-AIRE The whole of January seems to have been spent on training, etc. Casualties for the month – NIL 10/02/1918 Battalion arrived at LAPUGNOY. 12/02/1918 Moved to VERQUIN 14/02/1918 Moved to LA PREOL and into Brigade Reserve 25/02/1918 Rejoined 166 Inf Bde and moved to positions north of LA BASSEE canal. 26/02/1918 Enemy artillery activity 27/02/1918 Trench mortars fired by enemy, one OR casualty (wounded) 04/03/1918 Bn relieved and moved to support at GORRE 07/03/1918 Heavy bombardment and Bn “Stood To” in TUNING FORK locality. Casualties for month – 4 OR Killed, 1 OR Died of Wounds, 1 Officer, 11 OR wounded. 01/04/1918 Ban was occupying front line and support trenches immediately south of LA BASSEEE CANAL. Heavy enemy artillery. 05/04/1918 Spasmodic shelling 07/04/1918 Bn relieved and proceeded to billets in Le QUESNOY 08/04/1918 Moved to MESPLAUX FARM. Receibed orders to relieve Portugese Div. the following day. 09/04/1918 Heavy enemy bombardment started at 4 a.m. and Bn moved to TUNING FORK locality. Heavy casualties sustained en route. Shelling continued until 9.50 a.m. when enemy attacked along the whole front. On immediate front the attack was unsuccessful but on the left, the front occupied by the Portugese was penetrated and a defensive flank had to be formed. Evening and night were comparatively quiet. 10/04/1918 “Z” Coy attacked three times during the day but the enemy beaten off on each occasion with heavy losses. In the last attack, 2 machine guns and 10 prisoners were captured. During the day, enemy aeroplanes bearing British markings dropped bombs on GORRE. That’s about it, really. No mention of Walter by name, I’m afraid. Interestingly, there are several typed reports of the general period 9th-13th April by differing men (not officers), and if you PM me an email address, I’ll send them over to you (but it will be tomorrow).
