His rank differs. Probably temporary.

Anyone got better explanation?

His MIC has Capt. crossed out and replaced by Lt.

He has an entry in De Ruvigny's - not sure if I'm allowed to post the image any more, but it reads, inter alia, "Capt., 2nd Battn., [...] gazetted 2nd Lieut. Wiltshire Regiment 4 March 1911; promoted Lieut. 9 March 1914, and Capt. on the battlefield the following Oct. [...] killed in action at Reutel near Ypres, 23 Oct. 1914"

This might be his records at Kew WO 339/7833 GRIMSTON H S, Lieut 1909-1914

I think its all to do with acting/ temporary/substantial appointments , he may have been an acting Captain when he died but was not ever promoted as such hence his records are for a Lieut. His family understandably ignored the niceties and used his rank when he died.
