Looking for a bit of general info for 11th Sept 1915. Got a lad who was KIA with the RAMC 88th Field Ambulance. Probably need to go see the specific war diary but for now was hoping that the reg histories might have a bit of info for me.

Thanks

Glyn

This fits that bill in being general re the 88th Brigade, which was at Suvla

4th Worcs – Kuchuk Anafarta Ova sector on 9th September

1st Essex – Reserve trenches behind Hill 28 on 8th, then Kuchuk Anafarta Ova

2nd Hants – forward to firing line on 8th taking over positions in Sulajik sector

1/5th Royal Scots – forward to firing line on 8th Scimitar Hill sector

(Info from Ray Westlake's book 'British Regiments at Gallipoli')

NA Catalogue only shows 87 and 89 Field Ambulances at Gallipoli ! WO95/4309 for both.

Maybe a listing error ?

Thinking it must be a listing error, this is the chap I am looking at,

Name: AMBROSE

Initials: L

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Royal Army Medical Corps

Unit Text: 88th (1st/1st East Anglian) Field Amb

Age: 19

Date of Death: 11/09/1915

Service No: 2313

Additional information: Son of William Henry and Sarah Jane Ambrose, of St. James St., Castle Hedingham, Essex.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Sp. Mem. B. 24.

Cemetery: 7th FIELD AMBULANCE CEMETERY

And as far as I can find out 88th were 29th Division Designated 1/1st East Anglian and in Gallipoli until Jan 1916 and moved to france in Feb 1916.

Cheers

Glyn,

This is later than the period covered in my post No.2 above. If the 88th F A stayed with their Brigade, then when they evacuated from Suvla, they re-landed back at Helles

4 Worcs - left Suvla 19/20th Dec for Imbros. Left Imbros for Helles 22/26th Dec

1 Essex - began leaving Suvla 18th for Imbros. Left Imbros and landed W Beach, Helles 22nd

2 Hants – began leaving Suvla 18th; part to Mudros and part to Imbros.

Imbros detachment sailed for Helles 22nd. Mudros detachment arrived Helles 25th

1/5 Royal Scots; greatly reduced in strength and having received no drafts, withdrew from Suvla 18th October. They were replaced by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment

Perhaps only the War Diary will tell you exactly where the 88th FA was and when.

(once again, info from that excellent book by Ray Westlake; 'British Regiments at Gallipoli')

regards

Michael
