I have a photo of my father in his RFC uniform, and on his left arm towards the bottom is a single stripe upside down. Can any tell me what this was for?

It sounds like it's a Long Service Good Conduct stripe - they were awarded for different lengths of "undetected crime". A picture would confirm it.

Yes, it is a LSGC stripe - first stripe awarded for 2 years LSGC, next stripe would have been for 5 years:

Welcome to the forum John,

If you have his service number we may be able to help you find his RAF service record. His army service record for his time in the RFC is a standard army search.
