Welcome !

You should PM Steven Broomfield as he let slip a couple of weeks back that he did a few hours in helping them out at the 11 (POWO) Hussars Museum in Winchester !

He might be a bit busy re-modelling his garden (not far from the Rose Bowl) as there are loads of soil heaps all over the fields nearby.

Clarky,

Is the chap you are looking for Bertie Nichoson?

If so, he may not have been from Liverpool after all! There is a record showing him joining the 11th Hussars in 1905, and being born in Norfolk.

Of course, if he wasn't Bertie, ignore the above!

There is a MIC for 1151 Lance Corporal Bertie Nicholson in 11th Hussars and later ASC. The record you found shows him being discharged from the RASC so I'd say that's Clarky's man. :D

1151 indicates that he joined the 11th Hussars around September 1907. Does that fit?

To trace living relatives is always difficult

You need his birth cert to tell you where and when he was born, then go to both Ancestry and GenesReunited, and search people's trees with those details. If anyone has him then you can contact that person to see what more they can tell you.

Sometimes however the person with the tree may be something like a 23rd cousin 6 times removed, and cannot help.

There are also family forum boards on Ancestry where you can post a notice of you own

You need to find him in 1911 census to get other siblings, so that you can look for them in the above sites.

..and once you have his correct service no, try ancestry to see if his service record has survived

Sadly they have very little on individual soldiers. If you Google "Horsepower - King's Royal Hussars Museum" that will take you to their website. Drop them a line/e-mail/phone call and they'll do what they can, but it will sadly probably be very little.

Hmmm!

The case of 1151 Bertie Nicholson has more to it than meets the eye because it wasn't his real name!

(Also the records seem to show that 1151 was his number in 13th Hussars to which he transferred from being 5619 in 11th Hussars, but then apparently returned to 11th Hussars before going to France in 1914, but I might have misunderstood that bit.)

He was really William RICHES of Caston, Norfolk. He originally enlisted in 1st Bn Norfolk Regiment from 3rd Bn at Norwich on 16/9/1903 aged 18 years, 8 months.

William Riches has two short batches of service records on Ancestry, one of which contains a couple of pages of Bertie Nicholson's papers. His record with the Norfolk Regt is brief - transferred 2nd Bn 7/1/04 - and ends with "Struck off as deserter 14/2/05".

This is the same day that "Bertie Nicholson" joined 11th Hussars at Kings Lynn.

Bertie Nicholson's record shows the following NoK details:

Mother: Emma BRITTAIN, No.3 Gooses Lane, Waterloo Rd, Norwich (deleted with "Mrs Ellen RICHES, Caston nr Attleborough, Norfolk" written above)

Younger Brother: Albert NICHOLSON, Norfolk Regiment (deleted)

Sister: Mrs Hannah ?STANNARD, Heaton Rd, Watton (deleted)

It then records that he married Agnes Elizabeth WILDE at Norwich on 19/7/13. Children Donald (illeg. 1910 Coltishall, Norfolk), Audrey (1914 Wroxham, Norfolk), and Ivy Ellen (1916 Buxton, Norfolk).

The BMDs confirm that Agnes Elizabeth WILDE married William RICHES in 1913, and both daughters' births are registered as RICHES.

Nicholson's record shows that he was convicted of Fraudulent Enlistment in January 1906 and of Desertion in January 1909, but he continued to serve under his assumed name, at Home until 1907, then 5 years in India, then Home again until the War. Aside from his enlistment problems, he appears to have been an exemplary soldier, sober and dependable.

He was transferred to the ASC on 3/7/15.

Are you sure this is "your" Bertie Nicholson, clarky?
