Remembered Today:

South African Artillery research

Auto

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I would like to research a Bombardier who served in the SAHA during ww1 (I am unsure if SAHA stands for South African Horse Artillery or South African Heavy Artillery as I have seen both abbreviated as SAHA) however I do not know what records are available for south african artillery or how to research them.

Could someone please tell me what records are available and how to go about researching them?

Many thanks, David.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

and enter south african AND artillery in Word or phrase and WO95 on the bottom line. You get a list of 13 War Diary references.

Thanks for that info Sotonmate.

Can anyone recommend any professional researchers for obtaining south african service records?

David.

You could try sending a PM to ARCHER,he lives in the RSA and might know how to direct you forward. I don't think he does research but he might know of someone who does,or might merely give you a link to follow,or, you could try this first:

You could try a name search at http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300c...F85%26DB%3DSABE too (this should take you into National Archives of South Africa (NASA) Database: National Archives Repository (Public Records of Central Government since 1910) )

Thanks Sotonmate, I'll send a PM to ARCHER.

A name search on the National Archives of South Africa (NASA) Database didnt give any matches.

SAHA is definitely South African Heavy Artillery. Most service records exist and are here

Ina Building

Telephone: + 27 12 322-6350/9

Facsimile: + 27 12 339-4631

Enquiries: Ms T Schneider (Extension 211)

eMail: sandfdoc@mweb.co.za

The response can be variable and I would suggest a phone call.

The system is unsophisticated and the files are alphabethical under the surname as enlisted.

I would suggest that you contact / use Graham Du Toit and his eMail is gcldt dot udfres at webmail dot co dot za

He is a retired SAAF Colonel and his work is very good.

His fixed telephone is +27 12 662 3596.

I have copies of all the known records (except the service records) and if you require a look-up . . . .

Carl
